After a very long hiatus for personal reasons, I thought I’d come back with a color work beginner friendly headband knitting pattern in honor of my favorite holiday, Halloween! I wanted somethings that appeases both my love of Halloween and my former goth kid, but easy enough for people who may want to jump into their first stranded color work project. The result – this adorable Little Skulls Headband!
It’s perfect for keeping your ears warm during Spooky Season (or ear round if you’re like me). It works up very quickly and the pattern includes both adult and child sizes, so it’s perfect for making an entire matching set for family trips to the pumpkin patch. It uses stranded color work to create the skulls, but is much easier than the Amanda Hat I designed a few years ago, so it’s perfect for knitters interested in learning color work techniques. It’s worked in the round, so there isn’t any confusing parts with the color work.
I highly recommend using a knitting thimble or using the two handed knitting technique to keep the yarn from getting tangled while working, and its the perfect pattern to practice both techniques. There’s a few rows where trapping floats is necessary, but most rows have color changes within 3 stitches, so it keeps it easy and interesting.
For this pattern, you’ll need:
- 1 skein (or less) of black worsted weight yarn.
- 1 skein (or less) of white worsted weight yarn (or the contrasting color of your choice)
- 1 set of US 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles
- 1 set of US 4 (3.5 mm) double pointed needles
- stitch marker
- tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Knitting thimble is optional, but recommended for those who want to hold all their yarn in one hand.
I don’t have a video pattern for this pattern like I typically do on my YouTube channel, but if you’re interested in one, let me know in the comments and I can make it. The free pattern is available for download here.

Happy knitting and happy Halloween!
